Advancing Government Accountability

The Association of Government Accountants is a professional association of more than 18,500 individuals representing executive levels in federal, state and local government agencies and departments. Members include accountants, auditors (contract, financial and performance), budget analysts, chief financial officers, electronic data processors, finance directors, inspectors general and system designers. The Association serves its members by providing quality educational programs, encouraging professional development and certification while serving as an advocate for the profession.

Our local chapter has developed the following as our role:

  • Maintain our role in government financial management.
  • Provide quality training relevant to the needs of the government financial community.
  • Be a leader in providing service to the community and provide
    opportunities for networking.

AGA History

Since 1950, the Association of Government Accountants has been--and remains today--the educational organization dedicated to the enhancement of public financial management. AGA serves the professional interests of financial managers, from local, state and federal governments, as well as public accounting firms, responsible for effectively using billions of dollars and other monetary resources every day.

For more than 50 years, AGA has been addressing the issues and challenges facing government financial managers.

The AGA has been instrumental in developing accounting and auditing standards and in generating new concepts for the effective organization and administration of financial management functions, including the passage of the Inspector General Act of 1978 and Chief Financial Officer's Act of 1990. AGA conducts independent research and analysis of all aspects of government financial management. These studies have led AGA to be recognized as a leading advocate for improving the quality and effectiveness of government fiscal administration

President's Message

First, as the out going VP, I would like to thank Al Quint, Executive Officers, Board of Directors, and other office Positions for their service during the past year.  With several key positions vacant, it has been a rough year.  But with the new officers and continued service of present officers, hopefully we will have a successful year. To insure our successful, my vision for the coming year and in subsequent years is:

  • Increase membership by 20 to 30%-As of 7 June, we had 153 members; Angie, our Membership Chair has already recruited 6 new members.  But, she can’t do it alone.  So, if each member just recruited one new member, we will achieve and exceed our goal.

  • Establish Satellites-To help with membership growth, we will also try to establish a few satellites.  With our webmaster (Truc) going to Korea, my office chief in Tacoma, WA, and with a sister Air Force Audit office in Nellis (near Las Vegas), NV, these are the satellites we will work on establishing.  I have contacted National and they are in favor of the effort.

  • SF Chapter-As you may know, the SF Chapter is inactive.  We will try to see if the remaining members would like to join our chapter or get them reactivated.

  • Update the Website-At a retirement party I recently attend, I was talking to a past AGA member who said she checkout our website and though we had folded.  So, I’m tasking our Webmaster-Truc to Kick-It-Up-A-Notch.  So, checkout our website for this year’s new and improved model.
  • Mini-Conference-We failed to hold any conferences in the past few years but this year we will host one or two.

  • Audio Conferences-We will also host several audio conferences during our luncheons.

  • Reestablish Newsletter-We missed a few of our newsletters last year, but hopefully we will get back to a monthly routine.

  • Increase Community Service-I would like to increase our Community Service events and hopeful see more new faces at the events.

Finally, to make this coming year more successful, we need each member to pitch in.  I know a lot of members have been on the sidelines as fans or just sitting on the bench, so to speak, but its time to get in the game.  Each member has special talents which could be utilized in the coming year.   Please call to volunteer for a Sacramento AGA Chapter position or community service event and help make the coming year a success.

Thanks

Bill J. Tom
